Potty training your puppy can feel like a big task, but with the right approach and consistency, it’s a smooth and rewarding experience. At Sev's Favorite Flavors, we believe in natural, healthy routines for pets, and that extends to potty training! Here’s a guide to help you get started.
1. Establish a Routine
Puppies thrive on routine. By sticking to a schedule, you teach your puppy when it’s time to eat, play, and do their business. A good rule of thumb is that puppies can hold their bladder for about one hour for each month of age. For example, if your puppy is 2 months old, they can hold it for roughly two hours. To avoid accidents, don't go longer than this between bathroom breaks.
Take your puppy outside frequently—at least every two hours—especially after they wake up, during and after playtime, and after eating or drinking. If your puppy needs more potty breaks, make the time between potty breaks shorter, go every hour or even every 30 minutes if necessary.
2. Choose a Bathroom Spot
Consistency is key. Select a designated bathroom spot outside and always take your puppy there on a leash. When your puppy begins to relieve themselves, use a specific word or phrase like "go potty" or "do your business." Over time, this phrase will become a signal that encourages them to go.
Once they’ve finished, you can reward them with a fun walk or playtime.
3. Positive Reinforcement
Reward your puppy immediately after they go to the bathroom outdoors. Positive reinforcement is crucial to help them learn what’s expected. You can offer praise, affection, or even one of Sev's single-ingredient treats—but make sure to reward them the moment they finish, not once you’re back inside. Timing is everything, as puppies can easily get distracted and forget to finish if praised too soon.
4. Regular Feeding Schedule
A regular feeding schedule makes house training much easier. Puppies usually need to eat two to three times a day depending on their age. Feed them at the same time each day, and you’ll notice more consistent bathroom times as well. At Sev's Favorite Flavors, we recommend wholesome, natural foods and treats that can support your puppy’s digestive health.
5. Manage Nighttime Potty Breaks
About an hour before bedtime, pick up your puppy’s water dish to reduce the chances of needing a midnight bathroom break. Most puppies can sleep about seven hours without needing to go out. If they do wake you, keep things calm and quiet—don’t turn on too many lights, and avoid talking or playing with them. Take them outside, let them relieve themselves, and then return them to bed.
By keeping nighttime breaks low-key, your puppy won’t get the idea that it's playtime, making it easier for everyone to get back to sleep.
With patience, consistency, and a few natural rewards from Sev’s Favorite Flavors, you can help your puppy learn good habits and make potty training a success! Remember, every puppy learns at their own pace, so stick with your routine and celebrate the small victories. Happy training!
